Possible Complications Post Plastic Surgery

Author: Molly Wider

Some of the most frequent questions we receive concerning plastic surgery involve knowing more about the risks or possible complications that can arise after someone has gone through a cosmetic or plastic surgery procedure. While the risks usually depend on the type of procedure and its complexity, below, we have given some of the more common complications or unforeseen conditions that you may face once your cosmetic surgery is completed:

1) Excessive bleeding - A little bit of bleeding is quite common after plastic surgery. After all, there were incisions made by knives on your body and it takes time for these incisions to heal completely. However, at certain times patients may experience excessive bleeding, much more than what is considered normal. In such cases you should immediately contact your plastic surgeon and ask them for advice, or if your surgeon is not available and the bleeding persists, visit an ER. Your plastic surgeon may need to prescribe medication to reduce bleeding, or reexamine the places the incisions were made to check if everything is okay or if there is a more serious issue.

2) Development of Long term or permanent scars - Permanent scars are one of the factors that many potential cosmetic surgery candidates worry about. While initially it is perfectly fine if there are marks after the cosmetic surgery, depending upon the type of surgery you have been through, these scars should start fading over time. However in certain cases, these scars remain for a much longer time than normal and in a worst case scenario, permanent scars are formed on the body. Those going through any kind of cosmetic surgery should first ask their surgeons how long they should expect the scars to remain for their specific situation. If the scars do not show signs of fading even after the average amount of time specified by the surgeon, then you need to consult them on possible ways to make the scars disappear completely.

3) Body Rejecting Implants - For any kind of cosmetic surgery that involves implants such as breast implants or calf implants, as far as the body is concerned a foreign object has been inserted and it takes some time for it to get used to this foreign object. However, in some rare cases your body could end up rejecting the new implants and may not adjust to it at all. In such cases, a patient could go through mild to severe health conditions and the surgeon would need to remove the implants as soon as possible.
